Which editing service is right for you?
When you start looking at which editing service will be best suited to your manuscript (your baby), all of the options available to you may be completely overwhelming. That’s okay! It is overwhelming, but you really do want to get the option which will benefit you the most.
So, if you’re not sure then email me, and ask away. Send me more information about yourself and your project. Tell me about your kids that leave you with no time, and the dreams that despite having no time and very little sleep you still seem to possess for your book. I want to know them. I’ll then get back to you with the service that I think will be best for your needs.
Scheduling
You can book your edit as far in advance as you want to. Typically, scheduling is done 1-4 months in advance.
Turnaround time
Once I’ve had a look at your work I’ll be able to give you an estimated delivery date. Everyone’s work is different, and so delivery times will vary.
You will receive an estimated turnaround time before receiving an invoice. If you’re working on a specific deadline, then please let me know of this in advance so that I can try work with you to make your deadlines.
Payment
- I charge a project rate per manuscript. Rates vary depending on the quality and length of the work.
- If you would like me to quote based on hours, words, or pages, please let me know and I will convert my project rate into any of the above rates.
- I charge a non-refundable deposit of 5% to secure your booking.
- 50% of the project fee is due 24 hours before our start date.
Formatting
All documents must please be formatted as per the guidelines in this new client guide. Any documents that need formatting done by me before I start editing will incur a $50 / R500 formatting charge. I will however, notify you beforehand (you can choose to format it yourself or leave it to me).

- 12 point font size
- Double line spacing
- 1″ margins
- Page header with your name and manuscript title on the top left side
- Page numbers on the bottom right side
- Page breaks at the end of chapters

Deposits
I charge a non-refundable deposit of 5% to secure your booking.I require 50% of the project fee 24 hours before our start date
For smaller editing jobs (under 5000 words, book coaching, and manuscript critiques) I require full payment at time of booking.
Contract
All editing clients must sign a contract before I start a project. I will not work without a signed contract. I use a version of the Society of Editors and Proofreaders contract.
Payment
Payment is to be made in full within 14 days of submission of the final invoice via email. Any payment after the due date is subject to 2% interest per week.
Cancellation
Please see your contract for cancellation fees and terms.
Scope of work or changing editing services
Sometimes the editing services may change. You may also decide to add further services once a job has started.
Any editorial work not included in the original contract will be treated as a new job and will be billed accordingly. Extra work will also be scheduled in according to time availability. I reserve the right to request further funds, an extension of the deadline, or termination of the project and payment of time worked to that point if the editing work changes.
Communication
All communication will be done via email and Skype, during business hours.
Edits and track changes
I make use of Microsoft Word and track changes for my editing projects. Other software may not display the track changes as I have made them. When opening an edit, Search “display tracked changes” with the version of your word processor to make sure they all show in your version of the document.
